Pentro di Isernia or Pentro

Pentro Isernia is produced on the hills of the province of Isernia. The provincial capital, Isernia, is the site of the famous Museum of Santa Maria delle Monache, whose collections include archaeological material dating from the 6th century BC to the 1st century of the Christian era, as well as remains of fauna of various species of the Paleolithic period that were found in 1979.

The discoveries show that the most ancient intelligent hominid of Europe once lived in the vicinity of La Pineta. At that time, the area was a vast savannah of the African type through which a river flowed. And it was pitted with innumerable swamps and ponds. There were a few scattered trees of little height and with widely extended branches, a shape typical of climates with extended dry periods and short rainy seasons. In that extraordinary setting, the prehistoric man of Molise created a work that is extremely difficult to interpret: a pavement consisting of the skulls of bison and other bones of large mammals. And, in fact, no explanation of the significance or purpose of the artifact has won general acceptance.

The DOC Pentro is produced in three versions; Bianco, Rosso and Rosato. The white is derived from Trebbiano Toscano with the addition of Bombino Bianco, the formula generally followed throughout Molise and the Abruzzi. The two other versions are made from Montepulciano grapes with the addition of Sangiovese. The Rosé's color is the result of brief maceration of the must on the skins of the red grapes.
