History


Also known as Notar Domenico, this red grape variety is a long time in the area around Brindisi, but it is sparsely cultivated. Its use is only in blends with other varieties. Di Rovasenda (1877) makes mention but without any description. In the region between Ostuni and Caroviglia all'Ottavianello is grown concomitantly.

Follows, by region, a list of all DOC and DOCG is allowed where the use of this vine and a selection of producers who use it in one of their wines.

Viticulture and winemaking


Environmental and cultural characteristics and needs : it has medium leaf, orbicular or pentagonal, five-lobed; cluster medium, conical or cylindrical, simple or winged, medium compact or loose, medium berry, but not uniformly spherical in size, with plenty of skin covered with bloom, thin and tender, dark red-violet. The production is decent with a high yield of wort, in very fertile soils may have too much vigor.

Diseases and adversity : he has good tolerance to climatic and major parasites.
