A good vintage for Brunello, Chianti Classico and Vino Nobile

Weather Conditions

1975 is remembered for the extremely hot and dry summer which produced grapes of unusual concentration but also created problems of drought and consequently uneven ripening. To complicate matters further in Chianti it also rained during the harvest. The best results once again came from the earlier harvested DOCs in the south of the region, and from the microclimates in Chianti which survived the heat wave.

Best Appellations

It was without a doubt the outstanding Brunello vintage of the decade and in the opinion of many producers one of the all time greats, matched in the last thirty years by only 1990. Results in Chianti were more uneven, but the best wines were very good indeed. Produced wines which were big on alcohol, colour, extract and acidity.

Best Producers

Felsina, Monsanto, Montagliari (Vigna Casalosta) and Selvapiana all made Riservas equal to the reputation of the vintage. From the Antinori stable Tignanello and Sassicaia were both excellent. At Montalcino Biondi Santi made an historic Brunello Riserva which together with wines like Poggione, Barbi Colombini and Altesino's Riserva Montosoli should (if you can get your hands on a bottle) still be drinking well today.
